Windows 2008 no internet access warning




















I had 12 servers to migrate to new R2 servers. This issue randomly happened on about half of my new servers once I promoted them to DC's. I went through every process I knew to try and nothing seemed to work. Every server was still able to reach any website. And it did not affect any of my site to site replications. On a whim, I pulled up a prompt and ping I have really no explanation why but the "no internet access" and yellow triangle instantly went away.

I repeated this on the remaining servers with the issue and it instantly removed the warning. If anyone has an explanation I would love to hear it.

Just done this on my W2K8R2 server, only thin I can add is we are on a cisco catalyst switch. In my case, the server was virtual and had been moved to a different host. Once it accepted the IP and was able to access the internet, I was able to remove the reservation with no problem. Because I'm glad to have a solution but have no idea why it works and why it was ever a problem to begin with.

Why would setting a static IP ever result in Windows showing you have no internet as long as the settings are correct? Is NLA doing some hoodoo to determine internet connectivity? For several years, since info posted about local machine dns cache poisoning as malware vector, I have kept the local dns caching service turned off on domain machines I was connected remotely, and the connection did not seem to actually drop, don't think any users noticed anything.
